Holiday hours: fix them everywhere before the rush

A 4-minute read for local business owners heading into the holiday season

Every year the same quiet thing happens to thousands of small businesses. You change your hours for a holiday, a long weekend, an early close on Christmas Eve, and you update the one place you think of, usually your Google listing or your front door. Then a regular checks a map app that pulled your hours from a different database, sees the old time, and either shows up to a locked door or, worse, never leaves the house because it says you are closed.

The holidays are when this hurts most, because that is when the most people are checking, deciding on the spot, and choosing whoever looks open and certain. Wrong holiday hours are one of the most expensive mistakes in local search, and they are completely avoidable.

Why your hours are in more places than you think

Your hours do not live in one spot. They live in Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Waze, Facebook, voice assistants like Alexa and Siri, and a long tail of directories that copy from one another. Most of these were populated years ago and quietly kept copying. So when you update one, the others do not follow. A customer asking their phone “are they open right now” is not reading your website. They are reading whichever database answered first.

That is the trap of the holidays. You are busy, you make one change, and you assume it propagated. It did not.

Set special hours, not just regular hours

The fix that most owners miss: platforms like Google let you set special or holiday hours that override your regular schedule for a specific date, then automatically revert. Use them. Do not just change your regular hours for the day and hope you remember to change them back, because that is how a business ends up listed as permanently closing at 2pm in January.

On your Google Business Profile, look for the “Special hours” option under hours and add each holiday date with its real open and close time, or mark it closed. Do the same on Apple Business Connect and on Facebook. Setting them a week or two ahead means the platforms have time to show the right thing before the day arrives.

Make a short holiday-hours checklist

Before each major holiday, run down the same short list so nothing gets missed:

  • Google Business Profile. Set special hours for the date, or mark it closed.
  • Apple Business Connect. Same date, same hours.
  • Bing Places. Update the holiday hours.
  • Facebook. Update the hours on your page.
  • Your website and front door. The two places customers double-check.
  • Voice assistants. These read from the platforms above, so if those are right, so are the answers to “hey, are they open.”

If you have several dates coming up, Thanksgiving, the days around Christmas, New Year’s, set them all at once while you are thinking about it.

The reason this stays hard

Doing that checklist once is manageable. Doing it across every platform, every holiday, every year, and catching the long-tail directories that quietly drift, is where it falls apart for a busy owner. The information is not hard to change. It is hard to keep changed, in every place, at the same time.

That is the entire problem LocalBasics exists to solve. You keep your name, address, phone, hours, and categories accurate in one place, and we keep them synced and monitored across 70+ maps, directories, and voice assistants, so a holiday hours change lands everywhere at once and stays put. Set it, and stop worrying whether the fourth directory got the memo.

This holiday season, the businesses that win the walk-in are not the ones with the best sign in the window. They are the ones whose hours are right on the screen in a customer’s hand, at the exact moment she decides where to go.
