Why your Google listing shows the wrong phone number

You never changed your number. But this morning a customer mentioned they “called and got some other business,” and now you are staring at your own Google listing wondering how a number you do not recognize ended up there.

It happens more than you would think, and almost always without you doing anything. Here is how your number goes wrong, and why it is worth catching fast.

Google merged you with a listing you did not know existed

Google sometimes decides two listings are the same business and merges them. If the other one had an old number, a franchise line, or a number from a previous owner, that can become the number people see. You were never asked.

Someone “suggested an edit”

Anyone can suggest a change to your listing, and Google can accept it automatically. A well-meaning customer, a competitor, or a bot can submit a different number, and it can go live before you ever notice.

A data aggregator is feeding an old number

Your details flow through a handful of big data aggregators that supply info to maps and directories. If any of them still has a number from one owner or one location ago, that stale number keeps getting pushed back out, quietly overwriting the right one.

A call-tracking number got baked in

If you ever ran ads with a call-tracking number, or an agency set one up, it can end up embedded in your listing. When the campaign ends and the number gets recycled, your listing now sends customers to a dead or reassigned line.

An old duplicate listing is outranking your real one

Most businesses have more than one listing without realizing it: one from when they opened, one a directory created automatically, one from a move. If the wrong one surfaces, customers call the wrong number and you never hear the phone not ring.

Why this is worse than it sounds

A wrong number is not a cosmetic error. It is a customer who wanted to reach you, dialed in good faith, and got silence or a stranger. They do not investigate which number is real. They call the next business on the list, and you never find out it happened, which is exactly why it keeps happening.

How to actually fix it

Fixing the number on Google once does nothing for the aggregators, the duplicates, or the next auto-accepted edit. The durable fix is two parts: set one source of truth for your number and push it everywhere at once so every platform agrees, then keep watching so that when something tries to change it, you find out in days, not when a customer mentions it months later.

That is the whole idea behind LocalBasics. You set your number once, we keep every copy in sync, and we watch for changes so a wrong number never quietly costs you calls. You can run a free checkup to see whether the number on your listings is the one you actually answer.
