What customers and AI see when they search for a business like yours

When someone searches for a business like yours, a short list appears. It shows up in the map pack, and increasingly inside an AI answer written just for them. We went through 53,900 local search results for our 2026 Local AI Search Report, and the businesses that make that list share a recognizable profile. Here is what it looks like.

What a “found” business looks like

The businesses in the local pack had a clear pattern:

  • An average of 240 reviews (321 in large metros, 189 in smaller cities).
  • A rating almost always above 4.5 stars. Between 73% and 86% of pack businesses cleared 4.5, and more than half cleared 4.8.
  • A complete, consistent profile that Google and AI could read without guessing.

This is not a leaderboard to climb. It is a picture of what present and trusted looks like.

Reviews are table stakes, not a trick

What stands out is not a magic number of reviews, it is a steady flow of real ones. You earn these through good service and by simply asking happy customers. The count matters because it signals an active, real, trusted business, both to the person reading and to the AI deciding who to name.

Ratings set the floor

If your rating is under 4.5, you are the exception in the pack, not the rule. The goal is not a flawless 5.0. It is clearing the bar and holding it, through good work and by responding to the reviews you get, including the critical ones.

AI sees the same thing, and repeats it

Here is why this matters more than it used to. AI answers pull from the same profiles and reviews. In the report, between 45% and 61% of the sources AI cited pointed back to the business’s own website and Google profile. So the picture customers see is the same picture AI relays. A thin or inconsistent profile looks thin or inconsistent in both places.

What to do

  • Keep reviews coming. Ask every satisfied customer, and respond to the ones you receive.
  • Complete your profile fully and keep it accurate.
  • Keep the same core facts consistent everywhere, so AI corroborates one clear version of your business.

Common questions

How many reviews does my business need? There is no fixed number, but context helps. In our 2026 Local AI Search Report, the average business in Google’s local pack had about 240 reviews, and 321 in large metros. More important than any target is a steady, recent flow.

What rating do I need? Most businesses that show up clear 4.5 stars, and more than half clear 4.8. Aim to clear and hold 4.5 through good service and review responses, not a perfect score.

Does this affect AI answers too? Yes. AI pulls from the same profiles and reviews, so the accurate, well-reviewed profile that customers see is what AI reads and repeats.

The bottom line

Getting found is less mysterious than it sounds. The businesses on the list are the ones with accurate, complete profiles and a steady stream of real reviews. Be that business, consistently, everywhere, and you are eligible, in the map pack and in the AI answer. Keeping your information accurate across every place customers and AI look is what LocalBasics does for single-location businesses.
